Recent News of Interest (at least to me)
As I am sure you have heard, designer Alexander McQueen has passed away. This is just a short recap of the circumstances surrounding his death and comments from friends and fellow designers.
This is an article from Metro Weekly, which is a local gay newspaper. It mentions some of the recent Super Bowl festivities at gay bars in the area.
This article talks about Batwoman/Kate Kane, who is the very first gay superhero created by DC Comics. I love her description: “lesbian socialite by night and a crime-fighter by later in the night”.
I absolutely adore Alexander McQueen! There are few designers that have his vision and talent for execution of that vision. His presence will be sorely missed by the industry and those of us that just love fashion. But how does this relate to queer –race issues? Well, the fashion world might be the one place where heterosexuals are the weirdos. There are gays everywhere you turn: designers, make-up artists, hair stylists. Fashion is also a place where people of all races come together, and in fact are celebrated for their different racial characteristics and heritage.
I found the article on Super Bowl parties interesting because of course the stereotype says that gay men could care less about football (unless they’re checking out the players). Some bars, like JR’s, sort of show why such a stereotype exists. But most of the bars were having real Super Bowl parties that encouraged fans to come out and cheer for their teams. Like fashion, sports bring people of all races together. I don’t care if you are white, black, or purple, you’re welcome to watch the game with me. Just don’t bring any Redskins fans!
Finally, I enjoyed the article about Batwoman because it’s just so… Wow! Who thinks about this stuff? I have always heard the rumors that Batman and Robin are lovers but who knew DC actually created Batwoman to get rid of those pesky rumors? Now it turns out she’s actually a lesbian… that might open up a whole different can of worms for Batman. Personally, I love the idea of a hot lesbian saving me from danger!
